Sarah Humphreys

I am an experienced quilter – having made quilts for nearly 30 years. I was taught to sew by my mother and grandmother and am hugely grateful to them for introducing me to the joy of creating. I am fascinated by the social history of ‘women’s work’ and admire the creativity of quilters in years gone by who crafted beautiful but functional items. Consequently, most of my work is made to be used and the majority of my quilts ultimately end up on a bed.

My style has evolved over time and I see many contrasts in my work. I enjoy using modern, bright colours – or gothic prints and black. I take pride in accurate, traditional techniques and yet have great fun with improvised patchwork. I am hugely influenced by the history of quilting but love creating modern quilts. I was delighted that my exploration of the modern quilting aesthetic led to my quilt Office Doodle 1 being placed first in the Modern Category at Festival 2016.

As well as producing my own work, I love to inspire others to create. I am a qualified teacher and facilitate a range of workshops in patchwork, quilting and embroidery for both adults and young people. I also have a number of talks for quilting groups, including talks which can be delivered remotely.
